So, what is a Brazilian wax?” A Brazilian wax is where all hair is removed from the labia, perineum and anus. Or to put it another way – from your undercarriage and behind! The only hair left with a Brazilian wax is the “landing strip” of hair on the mons pubis (the top of your pubic bone). This is usually a rectangular shape of hair but some customers prefer a triangle. At nkd, we generally measure landing strips in terms of finger widths and will always ask you how wide you would like the strip before we start to remove the hair from around it.
How long does a Brazilian wax take? A standard Brazilian wax appointment at nkd is 30 minutes long. This allows enough time to get unchanged and changed at the beginning and end of every appointment and to get yourself comfortable on the couch, etc. Regular clients who come every 6 weeks and who have sparse regrowth are likely to be in and out within 20 minutes.
Does a Brazilian Wax hurt? We’re not going to beat around the bush here (pun intended). Complete waxing virgins may experience some discomfort during their first treatment. This will depend on many factors, including what your particular hair type is like, which hair removal methods you have used in the past and your hormone balance on the day. For example, if you have regularly shaved the area in the past, or have particularly thick, dense and/or coarse hair, then the discomfort may be greater than for someone with sparser and finer hair. We’d be lying if we said anything different to that. But we can absolutely promise you that the first time is the worst! In fact, you would not believe how much more comfortable a wax is once you are only waxing regrowth (e.g. 4-6 weeks after your previous wax) compared to full growth. From then on, it’s a walk in the park… You’re not going to get a wax that hurts less than it does at nkd. Our therapists are intensely trained and highly skilled and we have developed a number of techniques over the years to minimise the pain. In fact, we now teach the art of specialist waxing to beauty therapists and salon managers all over the country from our nkd training school, so they can try and wax like we do.
Can I keep my underwear on or wear paper pants during my Brazilian wax? Unfortunately not, no. nkd operates a strict “pants-off” policy (paper or otherwise) when it comes to Brazilian waxing because they simply impede our therapists from doing a quick and efficient job. However, you will be covered with a modesty towel which we will move around as necessary during the treatment.
What positions will I need to adopt?! For a Brazilian wax, you’ll be reclined on a couch, either flat on your back or with the headrest up. Your therapist will guide you throughout your treatment about which legs you need to bend and stretch and when, and which areas you need to hold, to help us get the best results and to minimise discomfort. During your Brazilian wax, we will need you to lift your legs up for a couple of minutes so that we can reach the hair around the back. We much prefer this positioning to flipping people over onto their front. However, if your therapist can’t reach all of the hair that way, if you have mobility issues (or for example are pregnant) then we may ask you to turn over for a short while.
Is having a Brazilian wax embarrassing? Absolutely not! That’s the beauty of coming to waxing specialists, you see… Your therapist won’t feel embarrassed at any point during your treatment, and there’s no need for you to either. Remember that your therapist probably carries out hundreds of Brazilian waxes every month, so you can rest assured that she really will have seen and done it all before! Unlike generalist beauty salons where you might encounter a therapist who spends most of her day painting nails/massaging/doing facials and who might not feel so comfortable getting down to business at the other end of the couch, this kind of activity really doesn’t faze our staff (and if it did, they’d be working in the wrong place!).
Do I need to do anything after my Brazilian wax? Following the correct at-home aftercare procedures are absolutely vital in making sure you get the best results from your Brazilian wax for as long as possible. After all, what’s the point in spending all that time and money finding a reputable salon and the best waxing therapist who can give you the perfect wax, if you are not going to look after the area at home to prolong the results? Your therapist will explain this to you during your treatment, but we recommend that you exfoliate and moisturise regularly with suitable products after your treatment. Doing so will prevent those oh-so-unsightly ingrown hairs that can blight an otherwise perfectly-preened private part. We would stress at this point the importance of sourcing an appropriate exfoliator and moisturiser and would urge you NOT to delve into the back of your bathroom cabinet for that old, half-used scrub that you’ve had in there for years, and that dodgy-smelling moisturiser that your old Aunt Maude gave you for Christmas in 2006! Your skin will not thank you for using inappropriate products (especially on intimate areas), and you could irritate it or even cause infection to form.
How long will the results of my Brazilian wax last for? Generally speaking, most women come and get waxed every 4 – 6 weeks. To be clear, you will not be completely hair-free for that length of time, but we obviously need your hair to have grown back a small amount to be able to wax it off again. For your first few Brazilian waxes, we recommend that you return every 4-5 weeks. This will get all your hairs into the same growth cycle, so they are all breaking through the skin at the same time. If your hair is not in the same growth cycle, you could come for a wax and then experience regrowth soon after, which will be hair that was just lurking under your skin at the time of your treatment and we couldn’t possibly have reached. After 3 months or so, once you have trained your hair into the same growth cycle, most people return every 5-6 weeks. Once you are into that routine, you should find that your skin stays beautifully smooth and hair-free for much longer after each session.
