Brows FAQs

Originating from the Middle East, threading is an increasingly popular form of hair removal for facial hair, such as eyebrows, upper lips, chins and the sides of your face. Your therapist will twist a piece of cotton with her fingers to trap the hairs and remove them from the root.

Threading is entirely natural, involves the use of no chemicals, does not damage the skin and removes even the finest of hairs. Many people now prefer it to waxing for the delicate facial area but of course this is down to personal preference.

In some countries, threading is used to remove hair from large body parts, e.g. legs. This is a painfully slow process, however, in more ways than one, so at nkd we reserve threading for brows and other facial areas only.

Threading is suitable for almost everyone, even those with very sensitive skin. This is because it quite literally uses nothing apart from a piece of cotton thread, so there is no heat, chemicals or anything else that could harm the delicate skin on your face.

Threading is ideal for creating or maintaining a perfect eyebrow shape, or for tidying up or removing other unwanted facial hair. Like waxing, after threading the hairs should grow back finer, softer and smoother afterwards.

Please do tell us if you are using Roaccutane (a medication usually used to treat extreme forms of acne) or if you know that you have particularly sensitive skin. In such instances, we may advise that only small areas of the face are threaded to start off with, to check that there will be no adverse reaction.

This is entirely down to personal preference. Some clients would only ever want their brows or other areas on their face waxed while others swear by threading. Both methods remove the hair from the root and give largely the same results, so it really is up to you.

If you’re unsure you should talk to one of our team at the point of booking. Most of our therapists are trained in both waxing and threading and the treatments take the same amount of time, so you can usually book an appointment and decide on the day in conjunction with your therapist. Not all of our therapists can thread though, so if you definitely want a thread, as opposed to a wax, that’s what you need to book in for!

Some clients really enjoy the sensation of threading and find it very relaxing, while others find it mildly uncomfortable. Until you try it, you won’t know which category you’ll fall into!

Like all nkd treatments, however, because we’re experts and extremely specialised in what we do, we can confidently say that the waxes and threads we carry out will hurt less than the same treatments at generalist beauty salons, which do not typically employ experts.

Most of our facial threading (and waxing) appointments, including eyebrows, upper lips, chins, nostrils and ears are ten minutes long. This makes it imperative that you arrive for your appointment in good time, as we’re unlikely to have sufficient time to carry out your treatment if you arrive late.
The area you have just had waxed or threaded may appear slightly red for a short time after your treatment, yes. Immediately after your treatment, we’ll apply some cooling gel which will soothe the area and reduce the redness.

Clients are very welcome to sit in our waiting room and read a magazine until the redness disappears. We do also sell some great handbag size products which you can buy for use after every treatment to mask the redness (see the next question).

If you book in for a full HD Brow appointment, as opposed to a simple wax, thread, or tint, we will apply make-up to the area at the end of the treatment which will hide any redness around your brows.

Yes, we sell a number of mini products that are ideal for this purpose. For example, you can buy a tube of soothing aloe vera or witchhazel gel, which will soothe, calm and cool the area after waxing or threading and which will help to alleviate any redness. Tinted and antibacterial/astringent versions are also available.
These mini 35ml tubes will easily fit into your pocket or your handbag and will last all year, so for just £3.00 are a wise investment!

We also sell a range of High Definition (HD Brow) make-up products which can also be used immediately after treatment and which will mask the redness. Speak to your therapist about these if you’re interested.

In general the rule is no. You’re advised to avoid applying most make-up products for around 4 hours after your threading treatment, unless it’s mineral make-up or another specialist product which has been formulated especially for use after these treatments.

Try and avoid putting anything else on your face in that time as well. The exception to this is specialist soothing gels — for example with cooling or antiseptic properties such as aloe vera or witchhazel — which again have been formulated especially for this purpose.

3-weeks is usually a good interval between brow and other facial waxing or threading appointments. Any longer and you may start to see stray hairs around your brows or on other areas of your face which you may be tempted to pluck or tweeze yourself. To get the best results from your treatments, we recommend that you don’t do this!

If you return for a brow thread within 3 weeks of your previous brow thread, you’ll pay a reduced price. For all other appointments, we offer a 10% maintenance discount if you return within 6 weeks for the same kind of treatments.

On your first appointment, we may be able to help you make your brows look thicker, but we can’t make them physically thicker! Although it involves the removal of some hair, a good brow reshape can make your brows look thicker. Meanwhile, an eyebrow tint certainly has this effect. We’d urge anyone out there who has never had their brows tinted to give this quick and cheap treatment a try, as you may be stunned by the results.

A standard brow waxing or threading appointment is 10 minutes long and there’s only so much we can achieve in this time. For a far more comprehensive brow reshape and colour, HD Brows is a more appropriate appointment which can definitely make your brows look thicker, mostly through the clever use of make-up.

If you’re willing to put in some time and investment, most brows can be encouraged to grow back thicker over time. In this instance we would work with you on a regrowth plan. We sell a product called RevitaBrow which we would strongly recommend to any clients wanting to encourage brow regrowth. RevitaBrow is a highly-effective advanced eyebrow conditioner which has the dual effect of making your brow hair longer, thicker and fuller while also conditioning the hair to make the brows look much healthier. Please ask us in the salon for more details.

Eyebrow tinting is a fantastic treatment which can make a dramatic difference to most people’s faces. It is suitable for almost everyone, although a patch test is necessary a minimum of 24 hours before your first tinting treatment with us. A tiny proportion of people will have a mild reaction to this patch test, in which case we are unable unable to proceed with the tinting treatment.

Tinting is especially effective for people with Caucasian hair. If you have Asian or African hair, it may already be very dark in which case you may not see the benefits of a tinting treatment. If you’re unsure, please visit our salon where we can assess your individual brows and make a personal recommendation for you.
Tinting can dramatically enhance your brow shape. It’s a little-known fact that eyelashes and eyebrows deteriorate as we age, starting from our mid to late 20s. Just like our skin and hair, eyelashes and eyebrows get thinner, sparser and more brittle as the years pass by, and the colour fades out of them. For this reason, regular eyebrow tinting appointments are a must-have beauty treatment for all savvy women, not least because it’s one of the quickest and cheapest beauty treatments to have these days, but also one that can make the most dramatic difference to your face!

If you’ve never had an eyebrow tint, we’d urge you to try one, even if you don’t think you need or would benefit from one! You’ll probably be thrilled with the results! Meanwhile, for a more comprehensive eyebrow tinting and recolouring service, you should consider trying HD Brows.

Before your treatment begins, we will assess your skin and hair colour and discuss with you your desired end result in terms of how you would like your brows to look, before deciding which shade of tint would be best for you. For example, we would never use black tint on someone who is very fair, so you don’t need to worry about coming out your treatment with massive black caterpillars in place where your eyebrows used to be!
We can always add more tint but we can’t remove it. For this reason, we will always err on the side of caution, which means that we may apply and remove the tint several times before we reach the desired shade. Every time we remove it, we will ask you if it’s dark enough. If not, we’ll simply reapply it until it is dark enough, even if we have to reapply 10 times!
That said, we’d always recommend that you have your brow tint at least one shade darker than you would ideally like it. Otherwise, you may find that the tint fades very quickly. The darker you go, the longer the results will last for.
No, lash and brow tinting are semi-permanent solutions whose results will last for around 3 weeks. Every time you wash your face or use make-up remover on it, a little bit of the tint will be removed.

To get the longest-lasting results we recommend that you go a shade or two darker with your brow tint than you would ideally like. Otherwise, you may found that the tint fades more quickly than you would like.

You need a patch test for all tinting treatments (e.g. lash and brow tinting) and HD Brows. You also need a patch test for certain lash treatments like semi-permanent lash extensions and LVL Lashes. You must have your patch test at least 24 hours before your appointment.
Yes, even if you’ve had a patch test and tinting treatments in the past at other salons, you will still need a patch test at least 24 hours before all first-time tinting and HD Brow treatments at nkd.
We will apply a tiny amount of product either behind your ear or on your forearm. For tinting and HD Brows, this product will be tint and for lash treatments it will be glue. We will ask you to sign and date a form stating that you have had a patch with us.

The process will take no more than a few minutes. The therapist carrying out the patch test will explain to you the signs of reaction you should be looking out for, e.g. any mild itching or swelling in the area. You must inform us in the case of these symptoms, in which case we would cancel the appointment at no charge to you. Otherwise we will proceed with the treatment as planned.

You do not need to book patch tests in advance. You can just walk in any time we’re open for a patch test. At the most, you’ll have to wait a few minutes in the event that our reception is extremely busy.
No, your patch test must be carried out a minimum of 24 hours before your first tinting, HD Brow or semi-permanent lash/LVL Lash treatment with us.
No, we’re sorry but no patch test no appointment. We do not offer the option of signing a disclaimer instead.
You can ring 0115 924 1454 and speak to one of our friendly receptionists when we’re open, or leave a message if we’re closed, and we’ll call you straight back the next morning.
You can email us on, with details of which treatment you’d like and when, and we’ll reply ASAP.
You can book an appointment online here, but if you can’t find what you’re looking for with online booking, then we’d recommend that you give us a ring.

Or of course, you can pop by our lovely salon and book in person!
Once you’ve been for your first treatment, we recommend that you book your next appointment before you leave the salon, so you can be sure of securing your next slot at your preferred day and time.

nkd is located in Nottingham city centre at 27 Pelham Street. Pelham Street is the hill that runs up to Hockley, from the city centre. So if you’re walking from the Market Square, you walk up the hill, keeping Zara to your right. You will pass Space NK, Sweaty Betty and Homemade café on your right hand side, and Thurland Street on your left. We’re further up the hill on the left, before you reach Hockley. We’re opposite Wired Café and Bodycraft Tattoo Parlour and next to Michael Levin, the jewellers.
The more notice you can give us please to cancel an appointment the better, but we require a minimum of 24 hours’ notice. If you cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice and we are unable to fill your appointment slot, or if you fail to turn up, we will retain any prepayment on your account/charge you in full for the missed appointment and will require prepayment in full ahead of all future appointments.
We also request a minimum of 24 hours’ notice to change an appointment time.
You need to call us on 0115 924 1454 to keep us informed of your movements. If we can move your appointment time back, we will do, but if we have another client booked in immediately after you and no other therapists are free, we’ll be unable to do this.

Depending on the time of arrival, late arrivals may be offered a reduced treatment or turned away altogether, but you would still be charged in full for the original appointment booked.
Please remember that brow waxing, threading and tinting treatments are very short, at typically ten minutes’ long. Even if you’re “only running 5 minutes’ late” this is 50% of your appointment time lost, hence why we may be unable to carry out your treatment.

If you’re a first-time client, you should arrive 10 minutes before your appointment time to fill out a consultation card. This will involve you giving us your main contact details and any basic medical details we need to know about (e.g. whether you have sensitive skin or any known allergies, eczema, have used acne creams on the area, are pregnant, etc). Your therapist may speak to you about the information you have given us on this card in private before your treatment starts.

For subsequent appointments as a repeat client, we politely request that you arrive 5 minutes before your appointment time to ensure a prompt start.

We’ll always try and accommodate walk-in appointments where we can, but the reality is we’re usually so busy that we can’t! As such, our advice would be to always give us as much notice as you can to avoid disappointment.
If you want a short appointment – such as an eyebrow wax or thread – then we’ll often be able to fit you in if you pop by. We do sometimes have other, longer slots, available at short notice on certain days, so it’s always worth giving us a quick call to check.

But generally speaking, if you want a longer appointment, if you’re at all restricted in the time you can come for your wax (e.g. if you want to come between 5 and 8pm in the evening, or on a busy day such as a Friday), or you want to see a specific therapist, then advance notice is most definitely recommended!

Absolutely, yes! You should bear in mind, however, that throughout pregnancy, your skin may be more sensitive than usual and your wax or thread may feel more uncomfortable than it otherwise would.

Please make sure you tell us if you are pregnant, even in the early stages, as it’s important that we keep your medical notes up to date on our consultation cards so that we can always treat you in the safest and most-effective manner.

Because we’re specialists at what we do and these specialist skills mean that your nkd treatment will generally be quicker, cause you less discomfort and give you better results than equivalent treatments from a generalist beauty salon, which tend to be jacks of all trades and masters of none.

There’s a reason that we don’t offer other beauty treatments such as massage, nails and facials at nkd and that’s because we recognise that we can’t possibly be experts in everything. So we’d rather offer a very specific range of treatments (waxing, lashes and brows) and be very, very good at those treatments, rather than offer a wider range of options but not be specialists in any of them.
We have extremely high professional standards at nkd and place a huge amount of emphasis on internal staff training to ensure that no therapist ever slips into bad habits behind the privacy of her treatment room doors.

We send out a post-treatment survey to every client after every visit, which is tantamount to continuously mystery shopping ourselves. We read each and every response we receive and we take action where necessary. To date we’re thrilled to have received some 5,000 survey responses, the vast majority of which are overwhelmingly positive.

That’s why we’re confident that once you’ve got nkd, you’ll never do it anywhere else!

Yes. We offer 15% to students every Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday and 20% off between 2 and 4pm on those days. There are no student discounts on a Monday, Friday and Saturday. Please bring an up-to-date and valid student card with you to every appointment. We’re sorry, but no student ID, no discount.
We do a range of special offers and promotions, most of which are aimed at rewarding and thanking our existing clients for their loyalty and custom.

10% maintenance discount: If you return within 6 weeks for the same kind of treatment we’ll automatically apply a 10% maintenance discount to your bill. Everyone’s a winner with this deal, as waxing regrowth is so much quicker and hurts a lot less than waxing full growth and you get to save money in the process.

(Threading clients get a return discount if they return within 3 weeks for a brow thread, while semi-permanent lash clients are offered an infill package rather than any maintenance discounts).

Have 10 treatments and your 11th is free: We operate a loyalty scheme whereby once you’ve had ten treatments, your 11th treatment will be on us. Remember to bring your loyalty card with you to every appointment to get a stamp.

Recommend your friends to us and reap the rewards: We’ll put £5.00 credit on your account to spend on treatments for every friend you recommend to us who subsequently comes in for a treatment. As an added bonus, your friend will get 10% off their first treatment as well.

Purchase one of our “Go All the Way and Save” Packages: There are some fantastic savings to be had with our combined waxing, lash and brow packages. For example, you can save £28.00 by buying an LVL Lashes treatment along with HD Brows and a Brazilian/Hollywood wax. The cost of this package is £100, compared to the £128 to buy these treatments separately. There are 5 different packages available with cost savings ranging from £23 – £38 and they’re available to buy all year round.

Buy a mini course of HD Brows or LVL Lashes and save up to £80.00: If you love HD Brows or LVL Lashes, why not purchase a mini course and save yourself up to £80.00? A single HD Brows treatment costs £35 or £31.50 if you’ve come back within 6 weeks. However, a course of 4 HD Brow treatments costs just £100, which means a brilliant £25 per treatment. Meanwhile, a single LVL Lashes treatment costs £55, or £49.50 with your 6-week maintenance discount. A course of 6 LVLs, which would last you a full year, costs £250, which works out at just £41.67 per treatment, and a saving of £80.00 compared to paying for the treatments individually.

Please note that only one special offer, promotion or discount can be used on any single visit.

For more details of all of these promotions and to read the full terms and conditions, see our special offers page.
