Good preparation makes a huge difference to the quality of your wax.
Whether you’re coming for your very first male Brazilian or Hollywood wax or you’ve been waxing for years, following a few simple steps before your appointment will help your therapist achieve the best possible results whilst making your treatment more comfortable.
At nkd, we’ve specialised in male intimate waxing for more than 17 years and have carried out thousands of treatments. These are the same recommendations we give every client before they visit us.

1. Let your hair growÂ
This is probably the single most important piece of advice.
If you’ve been shaving, we generally recommend allowing around 3–4 weeks of growth before your appointment.
If you’re already waxing regularly, we usually recommend returning every 4–6 weeks to achieve the best results.
One important point…
Please don’t trim the hair before your appointment.
It can be surprisingly difficult to judge the correct length at home, and trimming it too short may affect the quality of your wax or even mean your treatment has to be postponed.
If we feel any trimming is necessary, we’ll do this professionally in the salon before your treatment begins.

2. Don’t shave before your appointmentÂ
This is one of the most common reasons why male intimate waxing appointments have to be postponed.
If you’ve booked your first intimate wax after shaving, please don’t shave again before your appointment.
For the wax to grip the hair properly, we generally need around 3–4 weeks of regrowth following your last shave. If the hair is too short, the wax simply won’t be able to remove it effectively, meaning your treatment may not be able to go ahead.
We know it can feel tempting to have “one last shave” before your appointment, particularly if you’re feeling self-conscious about the regrowth.
Please don’t.
Allowing the hair to grow naturally gives us the best chance of achieving a thorough, even result and makes your first waxing appointment worthwhile.

3. Take your pre-appointment phone callÂ
Before your first appointment, our Salon Manager will give you a quick telephone call, usually lasting around five minutes.
This is an opportunity for us to introduce ourselves, explain how your appointment will work and ask a few pre-treatment consultation questions about your hair removal history, general health and anything else that may affect your treatment.
Following the call, we’ll email you a consultation form for you to complete before you arrive.
Please make every effort to take this call. Without it, we may not be able to proceed with your appointment.

4. Complete your consultation form before you arriveÂ
Wherever possible, please complete your consultation form before coming to the salon.
This gives your therapist time to review your answers before your appointment begins, allowing you to spend less time completing paperwork and more time focusing on your treatment.
When you arrive, your therapist will review your consultation with you privately and discuss anything that may affect your treatment.

5. Arrive freshly showeredÂ
Good hygiene is important for every intimate waxing appointment.
Wherever possible, please:
- shower or wash shortly before your appointment Â
- wear clean underwear Â
- avoid arriving straight from the gym or after heavy exercise Â
You’ll also find cleansing wipes in the treatment room should you wish to freshen up immediately before your treatment.
Your therapist won’t judge you, but arriving clean helps us maintain the highest standards of hygiene and allows us to carry out your treatment as comfortably as possible.

6. Wear comfortable clothingÂ
After waxing, your skin will be more sensitive than usual.
Loose-fitting clothing and underwear are generally much more comfortable than tight jeans, compression shorts or restrictive sportswear.
Reducing friction immediately after your appointment can also help minimise irritation.

7. Avoid alcohol before your appointmentÂ
Many people think having a drink beforehand will help calm their nerves.
In reality, alcohol can increase skin sensitivity and isn’t something we’d recommend before waxing.
A good night’s sleep, plenty of water and arriving relaxed will usually help far more.

8. Don’t worry if you’re feeling nervousÂ
Almost every first-time client feels apprehensive.
That’s completely normal.
Our therapists understand that booking your first intimate wax can feel like a big step.
They’ll explain everything clearly, answer any questions that arise during your appointment and guide you through every stage of the treatment.
If you’re feeling anxious beforehand, we’d strongly recommend reading the other articles in our Male Intimate Waxing Knowledge Centre.
We’ve created them to answer the questions we’re asked most often and to help you arrive feeling informed, confident and knowing exactly what to expect.
9. Plan your diary afterwardsÂ
Immediately after waxing, your skin needs a little time to recover.
For the first 24–48 hours, we recommend avoiding anything likely to irritate the freshly waxed skin.
This includes:
- strenuous exercise or anything that causes you to sweat heavilyÂ
- running, cycling or gym workoutsÂ
- hot baths, hot tubs, saunas and steam roomsÂ
- swimming poolsÂ
- tight or restrictive clothingÂ
- sexual intercourseÂ
Giving your skin this time to settle will help reduce irritation and allow the follicles to begin closing naturally.
Your therapist will discuss your aftercare throughout the appointment and recap the key advice before you leave.

10. Book your next appointmentÂ
This might sound strange before you’ve even had your first wax, but it’s one of the best pieces of advice we can give.
Your first appointment is almost always the most challenging because it’s removing the thickest, strongest hair.
Clients who return every 4–6 weeks generally find that:
- appointments become quickerÂ
- discomfort reduces significantlyÂ
- hair becomes finer and softerÂ
- results become more consistentÂ
Regular waxing isn’t just about staying smooth.
It’s about making every future appointment easier than the last.
